How to Read a League Table
Points, goal difference and the lines that mark promotion and relegation. Once you can read the table, every weekend's results mean more.
Points
Most football leagues award three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. Teams are ranked by total points.
The columns
- P or Pld: matches played.
- W, D, L: wins, draws, losses.
- GF, GA: goals for and against.
- GD: goal difference, goals scored minus goals conceded.
- Pts: points.
When teams are level
Tie-breakers differ by competition. Many use goal difference first, then goals scored; others look first at the results between the tied teams. Check the rules of the league you follow.
The lines on the table
In leagues with promotion and relegation, the top places earn a title, promotion or entry to another competition, and the bottom places drop to the division below. Those lines are why matches between mid-table sides in April can still matter.
Reading it honestly
Early in a season the table says little, because teams have played different opponents. Games in hand distort it too. Look at points per match if the numbers played are uneven.
