Starting Five-a-Side at Forty
Small-sided football is the easiest way back into the game. The pitch is smaller, the squad is smaller and nobody expects ninety minutes.
Why the small game suits a late start
Five-a-side football is played on a reduced pitch with smaller goals and five players a side, one of them a goalkeeper. Rules differ between venues, but games are short and substitutions are usually rolling, so you can come off when you need to.
Finding a game
- Local leisure centres and five-a-side venues run leagues graded by ability and often by age.
- Workplace and community teams are usually short of players and glad of a volunteer.
- Ask for a casual or veterans' session before you join a competitive league.
Kit that matters
Footwear suited to the surface matters more than anything else. Artificial turf, indoor courts and grass need different soles. Shin pads are required in most organised games.
The first month
- Play less than you want to. Fitness for football returns more slowly than enthusiasm.
- Take the breaks you are offered.
- If you have a heart condition, joint problems or have been inactive for years, speak to a doctor before you start.
If the pace is too much, walking football is a real alternative, not a consolation prize. And see warming up properly.
